Hurricanes
We have a long haul ahead of us.
The East coast and gulf coast regions of the United States are still experiencing a high cycle of hurricane activity which began in 1995. This high cycle of hurricane activity is expected to last from twenty to thirty years.
There is no reason to expect any change in hurricane patterns in the near future except for years when La Nina impacts our weather patters, as it did in 2006. According to Max Mayfield, the former director of the National Hurricane Center in Miami, we can expect more hurricanes in the future. Nobody knows what is going to happen, but should your home and property be in the path of destruction the better prepared you are, the more likely you are to weather the storm.
"Homeowners in areas where previous hurricanes have damaged their property need to complete minor repairs before the next hurricane season," Mayfield explained at the Wind Storm Conference in Orlando. "What seem like small items, a loose shingle for instance, will be weaknesses if another hurricane comes through, and could result in major damage if not repaired now." Everyone in coastal areas, and even homeowners living away from the coast need to prepare for hurricane season, Mayfield says.
Part of that preparation includes taking photos and video of your home, inside and out, before a storm hits. Take an inventory of your belongings. To download a quick and easy content inventory form click here (coming soon).
After a major storm hits, the last thing on your mind will be handling a complicated claim process and dealing with an insurance claim. It can be an extremely frustrating experience. Most people are more worried about-insurance-claims the immediate needs like food and shelter and most importantly the health and well being of your family. Many times people even lose their employment because their employers business was also destroyed. With all of this chaos, nobody should expect you to suddenly become a claim expert.
Are you going to take the word of the insurance adjuster on everything you are owed? Do you know who the insurance company adjuster works for? Take it from the experts who have been in catastrophic situations helping the public time and time again- you need the help of an experienced individual to help guide you through the complex process.
Sometimes insured's can damage their ability to collect on their claim simply by using the wrong terminology to describe their claim. For example, insureds often describe their claims as a flood which is not covered under their homeowners policy. The result? Claim DENIED. If you have water in your home because your roof blew off and the rain water came in that is NOT A CONSIDERED A FLOOD as defined in a standard policy. The insured's failure to correctly describe the claim just caused a claim denial.
If the wood on your roof has gotten wet and moldy due to water intrusion and the insured calls their company and says, "My roof is rotting", guess what? Rot is not covered. The result? Claim DENIED! A qualified public insurance adjuster may be able to help correct these issues. Florida Adjusting Services Team adjusters have taken many claims from DENIED to PAID. Unfortunately, sometimes an insured has damaged their ability to collect so badly by incorrectly trying to handle things on their own, that there is really nothing we can do to help. What do we recommend? Get the advice and assistance of a qualified public insurance adjuster at the onset of your claim. The less mistakes made, the better chance you have of an equitable and speedy recovery.
